How often have we had a “to do” list a mile long ?

How often have we been busy all day long and yet feel we accomplished nothing ?

How often do we realize at the end of the day that what we worked on isn’t bringing us closer to our goals or dreams?

Brian Tracy in “Eat That Frog” tells us to look at our tasks and challenges as a bunch of frogs. He then advises to eat the biggest, ugliest frog as we start our day so things have to get better.

This is a great advice and I have been following it for years.

An ugly frog sat next to my phone for years to remind me to eat my ugly frogs. One day my frog mysteriously disappeared . Maybe because the lesson had been learned.

I continue to teach this principle as I coach people .

Sometimes the frog reference confuses them.

Last night I came up with another example that may help.

I was taking the trash out after Chop Chop Lawn Care had completed our Spring yard clean up. There were three big bags of yard waste to be recycled.

A couple were PDH (pretty damn heavy). I had three bags to tackle . One about 75 pounds, another about 55 pounds and a third weighing about 30 pounds.

I had to decide how to get these to the curb. I actually paused for just a second to develop a game plan. I decided to tackle the beast first, the 55 pounder next and the easy 30 pounder last.

This only made sense to me. I knew when grunting the first bag it was only going to get better.

After moving all three bags I thought of the frog lesson I have shared so many times and sure thought this fit just as well.

Tackle the ugly frog, the heavy trash bag, the call you don’t want to make first and know the day has to get better.

Kick procrastination in the butt and eat the frog !

I always work hard on keep you informed on what is on my current reading list. My list continues to grow of “in progress’ reading. Since my last reading update very few books have been completed. Check out a detailed list of some books already on the nightstand discussed in my March 10th blog post.

As many of you know, I also run a small specialized CPA practice in the Metro Detroit area. With my last reading posting being mid-March, tax time has held me back from reading as much as I would like. Mary Ann (my wife) in late March handed me a copy of “Kill Alex Cross” by James Patterson to get my mind off work for a bit. It helped and I enjoyed an Alex Cross mystery as I always do.

On April 15th , I was gifted a copy of “Unintended Consequences” by Stuart Woods ( Stone Barrington at his best) and on the April 16th, I took a couple of hours and read it cover to cover.

Now that you know what I read to be entertained, let’s talk about a few books I have started and added to the pile on the nightstand !

1) How to Write a Book This Weekend, Even if You Flunked English Like I Did-an excellent e-book by my friend Vic Johnson. If you ever wanted to write a book, especially an e-book, this is a reference tool you can’t be without. Vic holds your hand and takes you from A-Z on how to write and promote your book. Love this one !

2) Circle Maker-Mark Batterson-This book deal with the power of prayer. I have heard great things about but just cracked the cover. I have the e-book version that comes with interactive videos as you read–a nice bonus feature.

3) The Tools-Phil Stutz & Barry Michels. This is a book about five tools that will help bring dynamic change in your life. Phil is a former prison psychiatrist and Barry a psychotherapist. As we use to say this is “heavy” stuff but is proving to be a very unique look at what drives the unconscious.

Once again the dusty titles that were discussed in March are:

1) People are Idiots and I Can Prove It-Larry Winget
2) Beautiful Outlaw – John Eldridge
3) I Am -Dr. Wayne Dyer
4) The Birth Order – Dr. Kevin Leman
5) 52 Mondays-The One Year Path to Outrageous Success & Lifetime Happiness-Vic Johnson
6) Best Practices are Stupid – Stephen Shapiro
7) Creating Magic-Lee Cockerell
8) Power Thoughts-12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind-Joyce Meyer

Grab one or two of these books and start reading. Read 15 minutes minimum every day !

Maybe it is just me, but my God, I can’t believe the news lately. For years I try to avoid the news because more than 50 % of has been negative. Now, if I turn on the news, 98% of it is negative. Ethical, objective reporting is gone. Reporters are on obvious agendas to influence a position – not report the news. Sides are taken on an issue, a political agenda adopted and the viewpoint is preached. Even the weather man this Spring brings depressing news.

If I turn on a sports channel, I hear about an athletes sexual preference, religious viewpoints, how they beat up their girlfriend, found their new girlfriend or their latest DUI. Highlights from the games the night before or even sports scores are tough to come by.

From my viewpoint this is total B.S. As a matter of fact, this totally sucks . I see no effort out there to help change this vicious circle.

I hope I’m not alone on this.

Please tell me at least a handful of you understand this.

Please tell me a few of you say enough is enough.

Please tell me you are a little PO’d and ready to fight back.

Please tell me you have a few ideas.

Let me, let the world know what you think is the answer.

None of us can hang our hats on just one issue and get stuck on that issue.

We have to agree to disagree on some things and ban together on the issues we can agree on. Disagreement doesn’t mean-I HATE YOU.

We need to demand better reporting and better ethics.

I look forward to Northern Michigan small town news. Reports about the ducks that held up traffic, the new donut shop that is opening in town and the big bass little Johnny caught.

Please tell me I’m not the only who longs for this.

Please comment on what you think the “magical” answer may be !

We’re in this together !

I was sad to hear that Larry Wilson passed away last week. No, he was not one of the Beach Boys!

Nor was he Gahan Wilson (look him up if you must!) who has some other fame.

I never met Larry but felt I knew him after studying his book Play to Win. To say I just read it would be an understatement as his book challenges a lot of the personal development theory I had learned over the years. I did not agree with all of Larry’s conclusions but I certainly respected them.

Larry shared so many nuggets of wisdom that I liked, I had to struggle to pick just ten but here they are:

1) Create a personal purpose statement. In the corporate world they call this a mission statement. This is all about chopping done to three sentences – maximum, what YOU are all about. If you can narrow this down to one sentence—even better. I worked for days on this and the clarity was extremely valuable.

2) Playing to Win is about not playing in fear or playing it safe. Avoiding stressful situations is fear. Are “things” we avoid really that awful? Playing to Win is living life to our full potential !

3) If you choose comfort over growth, don’t be surprised if using this weak long term plan causes you to go out of business.

4) Fulfillment, unlike success is largely defined internally. Fulfillment comes from the drive to discover and live with a sense of meaning. Fulfillment is not found by chasing success, working harder or running faster. It is found by stopping and thinking differently.

5) Larry teaches a strategic learning process. It is a detailed seven step process that is a lesson in itself . My favorire process is-I cannot fail, I can only learn and grow.

6) Rather than using high energy complaining and worrying about our problems, it is much more productive getting very good at solving them. The bigger the problems are, the more we grow .

7) Stop, Challenge & Choose-Stop and think before you respond. Challenge your conclusions from multiple viewpoints and only then choose how to proceed based on the results you are seeking.

8)The Four Fatal Fears-to succeed, to be right,to be accepted and to be comfortable. Enough said. Think about these and how they apply in your life.

9) We teach our scientists to make a lot of mistakes-we call them experiments. Those mistakes often turn into the positive results we seek.

10) Larry’s Poem- I face dragons everyday
I find the courage to chase them away.
I stop, I breathe, I center, I observe;
I challenge my thinking when it’s absurd.

I choose the thoughts that are best for me,
And those that are closest to reality.

I find the spirit that is truly me
And serve the world to set it free.

I don’t have to do what I’ve always been
I learn and grow and that’s how I win.

Rest in peace Larry–we’ll miss you!

My wife, Mary Ann & I were at the Chocolate Gallery Cafe for breakfast this morning and I was stopped by another frequent customer. She told me she recently lost her best friend and that my book, A Leprechaun in Your Pocket, has been “invaluable” the last few weeks in helping her deal with her loss.

Yes, that is what it is all about. I’m glad I could help in some small way. Most of the time I write I am trying to help someone. I never know whom that may be. I never know if it is a little help or maybe even a life saving piece of inspiration.

I have had many people write or call me and tell me how this book and my other books and writings have helped. Some comments have been shocking to me and darn near moved me to tears. I haven’t made a bunch of money selling books but I know they have had an impact.

A Leprechaun in Your Pocket is all inspiration. We all need some inspiration from time to time in our lives.

I’m proud and moved when I can help. I hope copies of this book get in the hands of the people who truly need it. Anything that happens after that is all gravy.

This post is a little rant, a little frustration, a snippet from a little scouting left in me, a little plea and a bunch of disappointment.

As a speaker who is often asked to talk about dreams, I ran out and preordered Coach Mike Babcock’s book- Leave No Doubt – a Credo for Chasing Your Dreams. A hockey book which mentions dreams and advice from a coach known for his motivation . The book was excellent with daily living advice that goes way beyond hockey.

My favorite quote that I use all the time from Coach Babcock is :

What makes success? First work ethic, second the will to win, and finally talent.

Last night and most of this short season, I saw little of the first two ingredients.

Watching the game “live” amplified these shortcomings. I saw players going through the motions vs. players with a desire to win. I saw a HUGE lack of leadership. A void Nick Lidstrom and before him Stevie “Y” provided for years. It is a role that screams for someone to provide. Captain Zetterberg, an outstanding player, was out last night but also is not the leader the team desperately needs.

It appears Mike Ilitch has lost interest in the team and has moved his purse to the Tigers. I see a sale of the Wings in the near future with Ilitch no longer caring about the product on the ice and looking for cash to pursue new projects on his radar. Mr. Ilitch is a great man, a leader in the Detroit area, a leader in youth hockey but I think the Wings to him, are an interest and challenge of the past.

I saw last night basically the Grand Rapids Amway Griffins with some unenthused veterans mixed in. Pavel Datsyuk was a pleasure to watch as always. Justin Abdelkader worked hard as a grinder. Justin Tootoo the closest thing the Wings have to an enforcer was tossed like a ragdoll head first into the bench. Ian White and Carlo Colaiacone were back in the line up but struggled greatly. Kronwell is so gun shy of being suspended he leaves his big hits at home. I had hoped to see Danny DeKeyser play to see if there is a sparkle of hope coming on defense.

The entire defense played “soft”. They backed carefully into corners and forgot they had bodies as they would only check with a hand on the hip or a hand on the shoulder of a Colorado player. Those hands were also “gently” placed.

The Wings rarely went into the corners agressively and when they did they were very manhandled.

Some may agrue the Wings have limited talent to work with. If that is true it is very sad for Hockey Town.

I suggest Coach Babcock goes back to his own basics I greatly admire -get players who want to win and work hard.

I think the Coach has a challege he hasn’t seen in many years. Don’t be surprised to see many moves in the off season. Mr. Ilitch please let them rebuild and open at least your piggybank if not your checkbook once again!

What makes success? First work ethic, second the will to win, and finally talent. -Mike Babcock (Red Wings Coach)

Lately, I have been burning both ends of the candles. Long days with some exciting results and some not too exciting results.

Extra time devoted to the CPA practice this time of year and the training I am providing has been picking up as well.

The news with world turmoil, threats and nasty debates over social policies never lets up.

Politics are very ugly on both sides of the aisle.

People socially are grumpy and discouraged. They bitch about the world turmoil, threats to our safety and security, threats to the way of life they have enjoyed for many years. Most people would like to toss out all politicians in DC and start all over.

The economy is still weak. Gas prices continue to rise.

Folks are paying more taxes than ever before yet more taxes we are told may be needed to make things work.

Smiles are few and far between.

It’s time to count our blessings (while we can ). It’s time to stand up for our beliefs. It’s time to smile and look for the positive out there.

It’s time to hold our heads up and to stop looking at our shoes .

It’s time to find a way to work together. Just because we disagree on a issue or issues, I don’t have to hate you and you don’t need to hate me.

Hate must stop.

I may be regressing to the 60′s but love needs to drive us. Love has to control our actions. It’s time to do our part and get this mixed up world back on track.

This may sound idealistic but heck, we need to start somewhere.

Who’s with me ??

It has been awhile since I have passed on my reading list. I have completed most of the books on the last “nightstand’ list and completed a few new ones that I will talk about in my next post.

Here is a list of what is on the nightstand right now starting with a few that have been there a few months. Remember, I normally am reading from 4-6 books at a time. Right now it is a much longer list. I am committed to finishing several of these books before starting another.

Here we go in no particular order:

1) People are Idiots and I can Prove It-Larry Winget-Sorry Larry, I may be one of the idiots. A bunch of good information but the flow just isn’t there for me. I’m not hanging onto the edge of my seat.

2) Beautiful Outlaw-John Eldredge. John is one of my favorite spiritual authors but this book is “deeper” than other books and is more theory and has less real life experiences. So far a little disappointed in this one but a good half book left.

3) I Am-Dr Wayne Dyer. This one just got lost in the shuffle. It is a children’s book and a great read for your children or grandchildren.

4) The Birth Order-Why You Are the Way You Are-Dr. Kevin Leman-good book and I am a student of birth order and psychology of how we think and act. Looking forward to finishing this one.

5) 52 Mondays-The One Year Path to Outrageous Success and Lifetime Happiness-Vic Johnson. I have been a student of Vic’s for years and this is another big hit. Loving reading some fantastic weekly advice. Don’t miss this one.

6) Best Practices are Stupid-Stephen Shapiro. Stephen is a leadership expert especially in the corporate world. So much information, it is not a quick read.

7) Creating Magic-Lee Cockerell. Walt Disney is a hero of mine and when I found a book from the former V.P. of Operations discussing leadership Disney strategies, I had to check it out. So far, so good . Only a few chapters in.

8) Power Thoughts-12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind-Joyce Meyer. I have only read the first 50 pages but this may turn out to be my favorite Joyce Meyer book.

Grab some, grab ‘em all but get reading !

Geeezzz, a lot to squeeze into a title and a bunch of “stuff” going on. Lots going on in the world and in the world of Doug Evans. Everytime I have sat down to blog, something happened to pull me away. Life has been hectic but mostly good. World headlines keep my head spinning. There is a lot to talk about so I will offer just a few thoughts on a bunch of things.

.. I’ll stop blogging now about Uncle Bob since most folks had no thoughts or comments. The final chapter is Uncle Bob is home doing better, has a long road to go dispite health care providers best efforts to do him in !

.. The Vatican is a buzz over electing a new Pope. As an old Catholic boy, I hope God will give the conclave wisdom for a powerful new leader. The church has many problems to solve. I’ll go on record as opposing the first non-Catholic Pope being elected or appointed by Washington and against Michelle Obama announcing the new Pope on prime time television.

.. Drones being used to arbitrarily kill any U.S. citizen without due process. Totally against this unless I get to decide who –no one else. Careful in the Vatican, watch overhead.

.. Being leary of “pop tart” guns. I’m ok with this. Just take one more bite and Time Square will appear. Although, I am worried about the letter “L” if you turn it the wrong way it looks like a gun ! I suggest the new letter “%^” to replace it. “L” will then be now known as the letter formerly known as “L”. It worked for Prince !

.. I’d outlaw Florida maps. Turn it the wrong way and you get…. ??? I’m just worried some law maker may look at Kentucky and Virginia side by side on a map and outlaw what they think they see. Then… we are in BIG trouble !

..Good Detroit news–my son David was selected to play against some of the old Red Wing alumni. Great to see him on the ice with Mickey Redmond, Chris Osgood, Chris Draper, Igor Larionov, Dougie Brownov just to name a few!

.. Bad Detroit News-Anything JoAnn Watson says and that many think the emergency manager appointment is a white supremist plot against the city of Detroit. These comments and thoughts in 2013 is utter stupidity. Many still maintain the city is not in financial trouble. Wow !

Finally, relax! There is hope. St Patty’s Day is around the corner !

..
