Part of my day today, a good part was “shopping” for a nursing home for an adopted Uncle. He has no family left and old man time (Father time) is catching up with him.

Nursing home shopping stinks. It’s like looking for the best parking lot.

“Unk” didn’t have his affairs in order. There were no plans and now this.

Get your affairs in order especially if you are a baby boomer or older.

Do it now!

Consider:

  • Medical power of attorney
  • Durable power of attorney
  • An up to date will
  • Trusts as needed-marital, generation skipping, charitable
  • Funeral wishes
  • Prepaid burial plans
  • Possessions bequeathed-make a very specific list

Discuss this list with loved ones or at least the person you wish to handle your estate or late life medical decisions.

My Dad’s plan was–once I’m gone who cares !

He left my sister Kathy and I with a mess.

A little money, lots of bills.

My list above may not cover all the planning you need.

Find a good estate attorney. Not an general practitioner . Maybe an elder law expert.

You probably need a good CPA to consult with too. Most attorneys aren’t tax experts. I have seen some huge mistakes that cost estates BIG tax dollars.

Anything you do is better than nothing at all.

Do something today !
